Suxity
“Suxity” /suxity/ SUCK-city
n. A location, place or state of being where it’s best to have your wits about you
Holed up at Blackbird Studios in Nashville last September and out she comes, the latest studio release from your friends at Umphrey’s McGee.
“Suxity is a lesson in simple syncopated, room-to-breathe funk-grunge. I was looking for a drastic contrast between the verses and the choruses . . . like Sly Stone dating Alice In Chains. The tune actually has a swift tempo, but the huge half-time makes it have a swampy swing feel to it. It was one of the more exciting tracks that we have ever cut live in the studio, just grinding, tight and heavy.”
– Jake Cinninger
“When I first heard Jake’s demo for “Suxity,” I immediately got excited and knew it would turn into something substantial, and that it would happen quickly. Right away, I was getting ideas in my head for melodies and lyrics, and I always take that as a good sign after listening to something for the first time.”

Don’t you think I meant it when I said it before?
Cost is a little too high
Everybody’s ready if you’re willing to try
Before you make up your mind and walk away
Be sure to take some time
Be careful what you say
Who’s in denial with a condescending smile?
I admit, I’m a wreck and I’m trying to forget
Motives you’ll never disown
I don’t think you’ve noticed when I told you before
Lost and a little surprised
Don’t you think I’ve benefited from some advice?
Before you make up your mind and walk away
Be sure to take some time
Who’s in denial with a condescending smile?
I admit, I’m a wreck and I’m trying to forget
Once in a while when I’m trying to down the dial
I admit, I’m a wreck and I’m trying to forget
Voices you’ve heard ’em before
I don’t think you’d notice but it’s hard to ignore
Who’s in denial with a condescending smile?
I admit, I’m a wreck and I’m trying to forget
Once in a while when I’m trying to down the dial
I admit, I’m a wreck and I’m trying to forget
I’m worth your while even though you’re not my style
I’ll admit, I’m a mess and I’ll take what I can get
Once in a while when I’m trying to down the dial
I admit, I’m a wreck and I’m trying to forget
I’ll admit I’m a mess and I’m trying to accept
I admit I’m a wreck but I’m trying to forget
“Suxity feels like two of Umphrey’s hallmark sounds battling it out: a James Brown style funk groove paired with a 90s grunge chorus. Brendan’s bouncy verse melody will stick with you for days while the chorus just seems to keep building & brooding over time. Jake’s guitar solo adds a dash of Steely Dan to the mix to round out this infectious tune. This song is for those who want to dance and head-bang at the same time.”
