Ali Baba’s Tahini “Bottom Feeders” Release
The newest work from Ali Baba’s Tahini, Jake Cinninger’s alter ego, has arrived. Bottom Feeders, the first ABT record ever available on vinyl, is the culmination of two years of work spelunking a binder full of tunes. Recorded at Jake’s Boondock Studio in Niles, Michigan, the album resonates the mood of a band hunkering down in a cozy, snowed in studio. The inventive songwriting from Karl Engelmann (long time UM collaborator) runs the musical gamut and a slew of guests add musical color throughout the record.
“We started the sessions in Niles on one of the coldest and snowiest weeks of the winter in January of 2018,” Engelmann reflects. “I drove up from Hayesville, North Carolina with my Gretsch Guitar, Hollow Back Banjo, and some idea of what songs we wanted to try and lay down. But as most sessions do, the songs that we recorded ended up being the ones that fit the mood of the studio environment, more or less snowed in but insulated which made things still, dark, quiet and cozy.”
Bottom Feeders is laden with a vintage vibe that mirrors the gear and tonal choices used by the band throughout the session. Drummer Steve Krojo drives the train as Jake, Karl, and keyboardist Justin Powell pile on a myriad of vintage guitars, dobro, pedal steel, banjo and more. Lush string arrangements and sweeping, long tone horns round out a genre spanning twelve tracks. Produced by Jake Cinninger, Boondock engineer Jim Leep, and longtime UM engineer/producer Greg Magers, no reason to expect that Americana, rock, punk, and psychedelic could be anything but cozy bedfellows.
The album available for purchase on vinyl and digitally now.
