Video: The Silent Type

So . . . we made a new video. Seen through a first person mixed reality lens, the video finds our protagonist swept up in a wild night out where the lines of what’s real and what’s artificial begin to blur. The frenetic-paced video matches the dark energy of the tune as it takes you through a surreal night out in Chicago, ladled with temptation, amplified by soon-not-to-be futuristic technology. Created with our friends at …

Record Store Day Black Friday

Caution: This record is SHARP! Umphrey’s McGee is pleased to unleash this 12″ custom die-cut record, designed exclusively for Record Store Day Black Friday, featuring two brand new tracks from the forthcoming release of ‘it’s not us’ in January 2018. The first single, “The Silent Type”, is classic UM: it’s infections riff rock, the musical equivalent of the record’s unique shape, sawing through your turntable. Side B features “Looks”, an uptempo driving composition that is sure …

Evolution of The Silent Type

Fans of Umphrey’s know that attending a show comes with the distinct possibility that you may hear the birth of a song. Maybe you’ll recognize a familiar riff that you’ve heard before but isn’t yet a song of its own. Or perhaps you’ll hear that familiar melody repeated in a different genre with vocals improvised on top. These instances are rarely planned, and though the best ones can be elusive, they are some of the …

Throwback Thursday

It’s unfortunate that we used our best two album titles on our first two albums (definitively not our best music), the stunning debut ‘Greatest Hits Vol. III’ and our sophomoric follow up ‘Songs for Older Women.’ #tbt #throwbackthursday #mamu

2018 West Coast Dates + Support

The it’s not us tour continues, as Umphrey’s McGee returns to the West Coast in March 2018. After taking a year off, UM returns to Aspen for a triple-header and the tour continues through Salt Lake City, Missoula, Seattle, Portland (times two), culminating with four nights in sunny California. Aspen will host a umVIP program (because after all, it’s Aspen), complete with elevated viewing, a pre-show band meet-and-greet, and more. West Coast Tour – the …

What the hell is Spotify Pre-Save?

Great, we thought you would never ask. Think of pre-save as the streaming equivalent of a pre-order. When you pre-save, all new album tracks will automatically be added to your Spotify library the moment they are released (wink, wink). You’ll also automatically start following UM on spotify (if you don’t already) to ensure that you’ll get updates anytime new Umphrey’s music is released. Pretty simple, pretty awesome.  We have created this handy widget for you …

A closer look at the CD face

The typewriter served as the inspiration for many elements of the packaging for #itsnotus, and the hammers specifically were the motivation for the CD face design. There is a lot of eye candy in there for you that love the details. 👀 🍭 We wonder how much longer we’ll be making actual compact discs, but we think this just might be our favorite yet. Every Deluxe Version includes the CD or you can pre-order it …

UPDATE: it’s not us Release Party

We heard from a number of you wanting to attend the it’s not us release party as a couple/roommates/dynamic duo etc. without duplicate deluxe versions of the album. So we are making that possible. You can now purchase two tickets and one deluxe version via UM Ticketing. Thanks for your continued support, as always. We look forward to celebrating with you in a manner worthy of it’s not us.

it’s not us Album Details

Umphrey’s McGee entered I.V. Labs Studio in Chicago in November of 2016 to record what would become the band’s eleventh full-length studio album. The result was it’s not us, the most vibrant, mature expression of the band’s growing studio prowess to date. “We decided to go in for a week, live, eat, and breathe Umphrey’s McGee,” recalls Joel, “we’re known as a strong live band, but we take so much pride in our writing. [In …
