Milwaukee: Joel’s Favorite Suburb
Many people ask me, what’s Chicago’s best suburb to visit? I always say, easy answer…. Milwaukee rules.
The Riverside Theater, which will be Umphrey’s McGee’s home for 3 nights this Halloween, sits squarely in the middle of all the action. One of my favorite things about downtown Milwaukee is that everything is walkable from hotels to bars to restaurants. Once you’ve set up shop in a downtown hotel, ditch the car keys, get out and explore. Here are a few of my favorite places to visit while in town:
The Water St. area is littered with options. Vagabond, Water St. Brewery, Trinity & the Harp are all very vibey & will be offering food & drink specials to Umphrey’s fans who have their tickets, so definitely stop by one of those for a deal. Vagabond will also offer a free trolley back & forth from the Riverside if you’d rather do that. Swinging Door & Safehouse are also good hangs nearby. Ale Asylum Riverhouse on 3rd St. is a good choice if you’re looking for a tap room. Fire On Water is also a classic Riverside post show spot that’s open later. Ian’s Pizza is also here for pre or post show food. Cubanitas is a favorite Cuban food sandwich spot of mine for lunch or a quicker dinner. Finally, Uber Tap Room & Cheese bar is the perfect spot to get your Wisconsin on, sample cheeses while enjoying a tasty brew.
3rd Ward is also a happening area that’s south of the Riverside with shopping, bars, restaurants and worth a walk on Broadway.
Upper East Side is typically a little divier. Brady St. is the epicenter with Thurman’s, a good bar & Zaffirios, the best pizza in town. Exclusive Company is a great mom n pop record store where we did an in store a few years ago if you want to shop for some music. Beans & Barley is a great food spot for any vegetarians, they serve lunch & dinner.
Hope these suggestions make your stay a little more enjoyable. We look forwarding to rocking with you soon.
